Weave Poles
Oct. 6th, 2008 02:32 pmPanic learned to weave with the 2x2 method. This is the first dog I've trained using that method; Toby and Maxie were lured (before I knew about any other methods) and the fosters were taught with Weave A Matics. I'm totally sold on 2x2s. Panic learned to weave in about a week, and he's awesome at it. He single steps and his head is real low to the ground. Zephyr and Laila, two BC fosters, pretty much learned to just plow through the poles as hard as they can and it took them both a really long time to transition to upright poles.
Anyway, here's a recent video I took of Panic weaving.
For comparison, here's Zephyr's weave poles, taught with Weave A Matics.
Obviously Zeph's not bad,(his entries are amazing!) but his footwork is very inconsistent. Overall I really like 2x2s. The method makes a lot of sense to me, and the dogs seem to really understand their task as well.
Panic still needs work on entering the poles at speed. He can make the entry, but really has trouble collecting himself and usually skips a pole. His stride is soooo long (I'm also learning because of this that I need to cue him for a turn several obstacles back, otherwise he just cannot collect himself in time. I see a few off courses in our future...). In the recent issue of Clean Run there was an article about the tire accidents, and Sherry Kluever talked about how she taught her BC Ransom to add an extra stride on a verbal command before taking the tire. I'm thinking of training Panic to do this before he enters the poles.
We have our first trial Halloween weekend. We're entered in FAST and Jumpers. We'll see what happens then! We'll get to see Zephyr there, too! He's already in Open, and has only been to a couple of trials. Toby is entered in FAST and Jumpers as well. We'll see if he can handle being around Zephyr AND Panic. That would be a great accomplishment!
