trickity tricks
Jan. 13th, 2009 06:07 pmI love teaching tricks, my dogs love learning tricks and I think they translate really well into agility skills. Win win win. Body awareness, strength, being tuned in to me and ready to learn, and most importantly just being really adorable are some of the many perks.
Panic has a very long repertoire* of tricks; he can do a handstand, ride a skateboard, close doors, be fancy (cross his paws), play dead (Bang!) and a ton more. I'm trying to get them all on video, but its proving to be difficult with it getting dark so early and general lack of time.
Panic is a master at shaping. He offers the most interesting things and catches on to what I want really quickly. He was trained with the clicker from as soon as I got him, and had no previous experience with any type of training. A total blank slate to work with! Maxie and Toby were trained "traditionally" but their transition to clicker training is in the works. It is so much harder to transition from one style to another, but they are doing really well and slowly learning that sitting and waiting to be told what to do doesn't work anymore!
Here's a trick we've been working on, which I think is really cute. I've also never seen this trick done before, so...originality points?
(Warning: Techno music!!!!)
*Did you know repertoire actually means a list of operas? I didn't until I was looking it up trying to see how to spell it.
