I got Developing Handling Skills a couple of days ago. Awesome book, fun to look at and it will definitely be a great reference guide. You can tell that a ton of work went into that book and I totally appreciate immense amount of thought that went into it so people like me can learn these concepts so easily.

Oh but don't be afraid, it doesn't have the word "system" in it, see: just Developing Handling Skills. So even if you aren't a "system" person or hate systems or whatever, I would still recommend this book. It's all about better communicating with your dog on course, and I don't understand why anyone wouldn't want that. It isn't at all formulaic, and there's no you must do this or that, it just presents skills and concepts that would allow you to run any course a countless number of ways.

Again, big thanks to Linda Mecklenburg for putting so much time and effort into such a project. And if you haven't picked up a copy of Developing Handling Skills yet, you should.

I've heard that from a lot of people, that it has a lot of great exercises. How convenient to have them laid out in a nice little book for you.

It's really awesome. Although it's anything from a little book. That thing is giant!

Developing Handling Skills and Nancy's upcoming Alphabet Drills are my two planned book purchases for 2011. :-)

I just broke into mine last night. A ton of thought and work went into it. A huge feat. I am looking forward to absorbing it all.

I agree - I totally think of it as a reference book rather than an exercise/drill book. It has tons of diagrams but I think it is meant to be *read* by the handler rather than brought out to the practice field. Like you said, regardless of the system, it really shows the how and why of handler doing "x" meaning that dog will do "y", for better or for worse. :) And it is immense and I really hope I can get through it before we see her again for summer camps! (BTW, we should both go to her International Skills camp this summer - how awesome would that be??)

Yes, it certainly doesn't have an drills in it! It is a great reference for anyone, unless I suppose you are dead-set on another "system".

I would absolutely love to go to a summer camp! Are you going for sure? I'm trying to find some camp info on her website but all I see is the option to purchase working/auditing spots and no specific info. But I also saw that Daisy Peel might be doing a seminar in Ohio in June, that would be a tough decision to make!

Nothing has been announced yet for APHS summer camps, but I am hoping there will be an international skills and handling camp in July or August like there was last year. Would be nice to have it before the NC Regional :) If Daisy is doing a seminar in Ohio in June, then I think you will have to go to both!
